Ukraine started the match brightly and had the first chance of the game when Yarmolenko fired wide from inside the area.
Slovakia then took the lead against the run of play when Mak fired home from close range after good work from Ondrej Duda.
Ukraine responded well to going behind and drew level just before the break when Yarmolenko converted a penalty after he was fouled by Milan Skriniar.
Ukraine continued to press in the second half and got their reward when Yaremchuk headed home from a corner to make it 2-1.
Slovakia pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way through the Ukraine defense.
